The Duke Nukem Forever Trapper Achievement requires the player to “kill 10 aliens with trip mines” and will give 20 gamer points when unlocked. Follow this brief achievement guide to find out the best way to unlock this Duke Nukem Forever Achievement.
Trip mines can be found in many places in Duke Nukem Forever. Your inventory of trip mines is displayed in the HUD underneath the graphic for your weapon’s ammunition and to the left of your pipe bomb count.
How to Lay a Trip Mine
To lay a trip mine, position Duke in front of the object you want to place the mine on. It takes some practice to learn how close you need to stand and where you need to be looking to get the trip mine where you want it. The trip mine will become active after a few seconds and will send out a laser as the tripping mechanism. If an alien (or Duke) crosses the laser, the trip mine will detonate.
Trip Mine Placement
Generally speaking, placing trip mines on the ground is a bad idea. They are best used in doorways and other narrow areas where the laser for the trip mine is horizontal and will only be set off by an alien who is close to the trip mine. If you use a trip mine in a wide open space or large room, (a) the mine might never be tripped, and you will have wasted it, or (b) the mine will be tripped by someone crossing the mine laser several feet away, and they won’t be hurt by it at all.
Unlocking the Trapper Achievement
The best place to unlock the Trapper Achievement is on chapter 12: The Duke Burger. At the end of the chapter, you will be on a roof awaiting evacuation. While you are waiting, several alien ships will, in succession, drop off pig cops and other aliens to attack you. Before they show up, you can find a corpse on the roof next to two EDF crates. Smash the crates to find supplies, among which are some trip mines. After you get the trip mines run over to the room on top of the building and lay mines on both doors and by the hole in the wall. These are the only entrances to this room, so if you place your trip mines well, you should be able to kill the attacking aliens.
There are some caveats to this method. First of all, if you are playing on a higher difficulty, the aliens might not be killed by only one trip mine explosion. For this reason, playing this particular chapter on “Piece of Cake” difficulty level might make it easier to unlock the achievement. Secondly, you might run out of trip mines or kill all the aliens yet not have reached the 10 alien goal. If this happens, go to your pause menu and load the chapter from the last checkpoint. The game will remember how many aliens you have already killed with trip mines, so doing this will help you get to the 10 alien goal.
