Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of Ryan Davis, video game journalist and podcaster. Ryan Davis, 34 years old, died on July 3, just after getting married the previous week.
It’s always sad to lose someone — especially someone who was so influential to so many people. The video game community (not to mention his loved ones) has lost a great leader.
Previously Ryan Davis was an editor at GameSpot. He also co-founded the highly successful website Giant Bomb. It was on that site that the announcement of Ryan’s tragic death was first reported.
The report did not state the cause of death.
“In the face of this awfulness, many of us will at least always remember him as we last saw him: outrageously, uproariously happy, looking forward to his next adventure with the biggest grin his face could hold.”
— Matthew Rorie, product manager at Giant Bomb
Ryan’s Legacy in the Video Game Industry
In 2008, Ryan co-founded Giant Bomb. In just three years, the site had grown massively popular. Time magazine called it “a mashup of a traditional game-info destination,” kind of like a Wikipedia for gaming news, reviews and commentary. Time named it one of the top 50 websites of 2011.
At Giant Bomb, Ryan hosted the popular weekly podcast “The Giant Bombcast,” where he discussed news and reviews about video games.
For the eight years prior to Giant Bomb, Ryan worked for the video game site GameSpot, where he started in 2000. His contributions included writing game reviews and co-hosting video shows such as Time Trotters and On the Spot.
Twitter Explodes with Reactions to Ryan Davis’ Death from the Video Game Community
After Giant Bomb published the announcement, Twitter was flooded with expressions of loss from video game industry analysts, game enthusiasts, journalists and games publishers.
The official twitter feed of Amazon Video Games tweeted, “A sad day in the industry, RIP Ryan Davis.”
Michael Pachter, Wedbush Securities analyst, tweeted, “Every time I saw Ryan Davis, I left smiling.”
