Duke Nukem Forever “Duke Lives” Walkthrough

This walkthrough for Duke Nukem Forever Chapter 1: “Duke Lives” will show you how to complete the first chapter of Duke Nukem Forever, unlock 4 achievements, and find 3 ego cap rewards.

After the introduction, you are instructed to take a piss. Press X to exit, or just keep pissing until Duke quits on his own. Turn right and there is a dividing wall that will take you out of the bathroom if you go to the left, or into the shower room if you go to the right. In the shower room, there are also toilets. There will be some unflushed poo in at least one the toilets. If you grab it, you will unlock the Duke Nukem Forever Turd Burglar Achievement. Throw down the poo, and head out of the bathroom.

Outside the bathroom, your comrades will be trying to make a plan about how to fight the alien invasion. There is a white board that you can interact with. Press X to “use” the white board, write something on it, and you will unlock the Duke Nukem Forever Drawrings Achievement.

Walk past the white board to find the exit door. Kick it open and you’ll be in a hallway leading to the Cycloid that has invaded the stadium. Walk towards the Cycloid, and an explosion will close the entrance to the stadium. Turn around and go down the staircase on your left.

You will come out of the staircase into another little hallway. The soldiers there will be fighting some aliens to the right. You want to go left. As you turn left, you will see another hallway with a group of soldiers advancing on the aliens. They will kill the aliens, which is good since you don’t have a weapon yet. Follow them to the end of the hall to find the Devastator and a lift that will take you up to the field where you will fight the Cycloid.

The Cycloid is easy to defeat. Keep a little bit of distance and continually strafe to avoid the Cycloid’s rockets. The Cycloid is big and very slow, so hitting it with your Devastator is easy. Air support brings in more ammo as you need it, so there isn’t really much difficulty here, even on Insane Difficulty. (The ammo drops are marked with red smoke so that you can easily find them.)

Before you kill the Cycloid, make sure to shoot some Devastator rounds at the blimp circling the stadium. Shoot it down to unlock the Duke Nukem Forever Sunday, Black Sunday Achievement.

 

When you have reduced the Cycloid’s health down to a flashing red bar, run up to the Cycloid and press X to climb on top of it. Tap A repeatedly to pull a hose out of its back, and then the Cycloid will die in front of you. Its eyeball will fall out. Press X as instructed to kick a field goal with the eye. This will unlock the Duke Nukem Forever One-Eyed Freak Achievement.

After the cut-scene, you are in Duke’s apartment. There are three objects here that you can interact with to give you ego cap rewards (these ego cap rewards will increase your total amount of health and will help you unlock the Duke Nukem Forever I Am All That Is Man Achievement).

The first ego cap reward is in the bathroom, which is the door across the room from the couch you were playing video games on. Go in the bathroom and turn right to see the mirror. Press X to admire yourself, and you’ll get +1 ego point.

After you admire yourself, turn around and go to the toilet. It is behind the door next to the shower. Use the toilet for another +1 ego. (While you are in the bathroom, make sure to check out the phone on the wall next to the toilet; this is the first message you need to listen to for the Duke Nukem Forever Call Waiting Achievement.)

Go out of the bathroom, and you will see a pool table. You can play a game of pool by yourself to get +2 ego points. Pool can get frustrating. The controls aren’t very conducive to controlling pool balls, and there’s no animation of a cue stick or anything; you just look at the ball and press X to hit it. The balls are framed up like 9 Ball, but the only rules are don’t scratch and don’t hit any balls off the table. You win by sinking all the pool balls. As I said, if you scratch, you lose, and you will have to start all over. If you don’t feel like doing this right now, you can come back later on by selecting the Chapter Select option from the Campaign menu.

After you are done playing pool, head to the elevator. To get to the elevator, just go through the doors into the hallway with glowing trim. Follow the hallway around to the elevator. Press X on the button next to the elevator door and the doors will open. Go inside and press X on the floor selection panel. This will end the first chapter.
