With the flood of new apps (games and otherwise) flooding into the world of Android, it can sometimes be overwhelming to try and find one worth its salt. For Android-powered soccer lovers, this burden has at least been temporarily relieved by the latest in the Flick Kick series: Flick Kick Football.
A Variety of Game Modes
As with any soccer game, the concept is simple: kick the ball into the goal. Flick Kick enhances this simplicity with several different game modes.
Before getting started, the “How to Play” and “Practice” modes familiarize players with the controls (kicking the ball with a flick of the finger, curving the ball around players, etc.).
After warming up, players can choose from “Skillshot,” “Arcade,” “Bullseye,” and “Time Attack” modes. Each mode uses a different combination of time restrictions and objectives to create a well-rounded gaming experience.
Life-sized Cardboard Defenders
The graphics in Flick Kick Football are surprisingly well-done for an mobile game. The game is set in first person, so the player is facing the goal. The sense of distance is realistically portrayed as is the movement of the ball.
However, despite the realism in the environment, the developers decided to use cardboard cut-outs as the defenders. Most of the time these lifeless defenders remain stationary, but sometimes they strafe along a fixed path to try and block shots. I don’t know if this was a technical necessity or a comical addition to the game (it is pretty funny).
A Rocking Soundtrack, Responsive Fans, and Riveting Sound Effects
From the moment you start app, the soundtrack greets you with eager rock tunes. The default volume is a bit louder than I was comfortable with and I didn’t really care for the music at any volume.
While in the actual game, the fans are very enthusiastic, and it really feels as if you are playing in front a full stadium. They cheer for you when you score and boo when you miss.
The sound effects add another dimension to the gameplay. The realism of the sound of kicking the ball or the ball bouncing off the goal posts mingles with common sounds of video games–chimes, dings, and beeps when a certain action occurs–to create a robust aural experience.
You Don’t Have to Game Alone
I’m always happy to see a mobile game that participates with OpenFeint. For those who don’t know, OpenFeint is an achievement system, similar to Xbox Live Achievements or PlayStation 3 trophies, that allow mobile gamers to keep track of their achievements across all OpenFeint-compatible games and compare with friends.
Want to play Flick Kick Football with a friend? That’s no problem with the “Pass & Play” mode.
With OpenFeint integration and a multiplayer game mode, Flick Kick Football does a great job of making a typically solitary gaming platform more social.
In Brief
Flick Kick Football is a very entertaining game for soccer lovers with an Android device. Despite the somewhat annoying menu music, the gameplay is a load of fun and is only enhanced by OpenFeint integration.
